History of the Center

The Environmental Education Center Vamos was established in 2002. In 2003 the contract was signed between the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs (as it was called)  under Minister Petros Efthymiou and Mayor of Vamos Stelios Michelakis and it is one of the first two that operated in Crete.

Its creation is due to the persistent interest of  the Mayor of Vamos(until 2002) John Hatzidakis who with the  Mayor  of Archanes at that time and currently elected Regional Governor of Crete Mr. Stavros Arnaoutakis ,exerted strong pressure on the government and  achieved the establishment of the first two Environmental Centers  of Crete,in Vamos and in Archanes.

Initially the offices of the EC  operated in the Community  Building of Litsarda and then in the building of the Primary School in Kalamitsi Alexandrou through the school year. 2004-2005.
The ECV is  hosted since the school year  2008-2009 ,under  mayor Limatzakis Leonidas, in  the "Municipal School of  Kefalas in Kefalas Apokoronou and was inaugurated by the  Minister of Education at that time,Evripidis Stylianidis.

The building was built in 1910, when Crete was called the Cretan State. It was renovated in the period 2002-2007 from the Ephorate of Modern Monuments of Chania, with the undivided attention of the Head of Byzantine Antiquities of Chania ,the archaeologist Mr. Michael Andrianakis.



The building has an area of ​​760 sq.m. and is composed by the following places. Manager’s Office, Pedagogical Group Office, Secretarial Office, Seminar hall, Library hall, Theatre games, Speleology room, Science lab, Creative workshop, kitchen, toilets, storage and space heating areas.
